View from Turlock Eagles 4-H Secretary
As secretary of my 4-H club, I can tell you that I love it, and I have learned so much. I have learned how to take minutes and important notes. As an officer I’ve gained knowledge from working with other officers and helping for future meetings and upcoming events. 4-H has given trainings on how to improve our skills too. I have learned how to be a great leader, work with others, and have lifelong skills that will stay with me as an adult.

What Do 4-H Members Learn - 4-H Members lean how to raise animals, how to cook, how to communicate, how to have etiquette and how to work together:
- First, they learn how to raise animals and they identify parts of animals and cuts of meat
- Second, they learn how to cook and how to make healthy choices from each of the five food groups, avoid spreading germs while cooking, measure and mix ingredients, test baked goods to ensure they are done, brown meat and set the table for a family meal.
- Third, they learn how to communicate and give talks to project groups and at community club meetings, sharing information about the skills they learned in a project and observing other people giving presentations.
- Fourth, they learn how to have etiquette and to have manners. Manners are like waiting their turn to be served and asking politely for seconds. For example saying "May I please have some more juice?" or saying "Thank you for the snack."
- Fifth, they learn how to work together and kids and teens complete hands-on projects in areas like health, science, agriculture and civic engagement in a positive environment where they receive guidance from adult mentors and are encouraged to take on proactive leadership roles and that is how they work together.

4-H Awards
In 4-H you can win many different awards. If you cite the 4-H creed you can win an award on how well you do. In 4-H you get a hat and on that hat you earn pins that are awards and which are displayed on the hat. You can win a pin as an award for proficiency day. Another pin you can earn is a 100% attendance pin. You can also earn a pin and stripe if you complete the requirements throughout the 4-H year in attending 4-H meetings and completing one project. It is exciting all the different types of awards that can be earned through the 4-H program.

Leadership Skills I have Learned as as 4-H Member
I have been in Turlock Eagles 4-H for 7 years - since I was 5 years old. Throughout my time in Turlock Eagles 4-H I have learned so many leadership skills. I have learned some of the rules of parliamentary procedure so that I understand how to run a meeting. I have learned how to work in a group of members in a way where sometimes I have to be the leader and sometimes I have to follow the lead of others. Teamwork is a huge leadership skill that 4-H teaches us. I have learned how to memorize and recite speaking positions in front of our members, in front of judges and in front of larger crowds. I have learned how to speak in a way that is professional and so that listeners can understand what I am saying.
This year I have been our 4-H club President and through that experience I have learned how to extemporaneously speak in front of our club members and parents in order to run the meeting smoothly and efficiently. As President I have learned how to create an agenda for the officer meetings so that we as officers are prepared for the upcoming club meeting. I have learned how to prepare a slide deck presentation as President so that our club meetings provide information to the members, so that our meetings run smoothly and so that we as officers stay on point throughout the meeting.
I look forward to the many more opportunities 4-H will bring for me to expand my leadership skills.
